Reading at Holly Spring Primary School

Whole Class Guided reading

As children master their phonetic skills and they begin to read more fluently we further enhance this with our Whole Class Guided reading approach. The aims of these sessions is to develop comprehansion skills and also enhance vocabulary understanding. Our systematic approach has helped to create children who not only read to enjoy but who are also able to have discussions about an author's choices and how these impact a reader.

Reading for pleasure

At Holly Spring we value reading. Our Headteacher, Mrs Marsh, is a real advocate for reading for pleasure and has prioritised improving our reading offer. Miss Goatley, our RFP leader, has created plenty of opportunities to access simply, great stories.

At Holly Spring our Reading for Pleasure promises include:

  • Time set aside everyday for children to hear their teacher read a really high quality text aloud from reception to year 6.
  • Teachers that love reading as much as children do. We have staff recommendations around the school and we also have a range of books hidden in our library that were read by 3 teachers before they could make it to the shelves.
  • Access to our school library on a weekly basis. Our library has undergone a recent makeover and is now brimming with a collection of diverse books that engage all.
  • Library clubs for children and their parents to help foster the love of reading beyond our school grounds.
